About the Dust Storm of 2009
The 2009 Australian dust storm swept across Australia on 22–23 September 2009. The capital, Canberra, experienced it on 22 September before it reached the cities of Sydney and Brisbane the following day.
The dust storm was described by the Bureau of Meteorology as a “pretty incredible event” that was “the worst in at least 70 years, if not the history of the state”. The storm measured more than 500 kilometres in width and 1,000 kilometres in length and covered dozens of towns and cities in two states. Estimates suggest that during the peak of the storm, the Australian continent was losing 75,000 tonnes of dust per hour off the NSW coast north of Sydney.
